What a trucker has to say...
Hey everyone, I’ve been getting questions about which dashcam I use, so I wanted to share my setup. I use the Garmin Dash Cam, and honestly, I’ve tried a lot of different ones, but this one’s been the best for me.
A quick tip: I actually lower the resolution to 720p. It still gives a high-quality image, but the main reason is that it records larger blocks of video before it starts overwriting itself. At higher resolutions like 1080p, it overwrites sooner, so you end up with fewer saved videos. I find 720p is more than enough—you don’t notice a huge quality difference, and it allows me to capture more footage.
The Garmin Dash Cam is pretty simple: it’s just a small square that sticks to the windshield, and I’ve never had issues with it falling off. The suction mount is solid. At the end of the day, I unplug it, but I cancel the automatic shutdown so it keeps draining the battery overnight. This helps extend the battery life over time.
Another tip: if you see something happen on the road and want to save that footage, unplug the camera right away and let it shut off on its own. That way, the video is preserved until you can transfer it to your laptop. If you wait until the end of the day, it’ll probably have overwritten itself, and you’ll lose the footage. So, remember: unplug it if something important happens.
I also disable the automatic event recording feature. For me, it just ends up saving a lot of clips that I don’t need—like someone braking suddenly in front of me. But if you find it helpful, you can leave it on.
